Following the Stones' turbulent 1969 US tour as it approached the end, filmmakers Albert & David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin filmed the band at their infamous free concert in San Francisco. Their cameras captured the violence and continued to roll when a concertgoer was fatally stabbed by a member of the concert's Hell's Angels security. On it's release in 1970 Gimme Shelter it signalled the death of the love and optimism of that characterised the previous decade. Brilliantly constructed, the movie and it's music was then structured as a lament for social collapse and loss of innocence. A seminal rock documentary that every music fan should see.
