Depicting an emotionally fragile young man who uses a life-like doll as a coping mechanism to deal with the effects of his difficult upbringing; Lars And The Real Girl is an unusual, offbeat and engaging film. Socially awkward Lars orders 'Bianca' online and, initially, to the dismay of his brother and sister-in-law, invents a relationship with her. According to Lars, Bianca is a shy wheelchair bound missionary from Brazil; and with Lars being devoutly religious, the story, refreshingly, never resorts to those obvious jokes. Their fabricated companionship helps Lars cope with and emerge from his childlike state and loneliness. Lars' family and friends take Bianca to their hearts and on the advice of the family's doctor, allow him to play out this scenario for as long as he needs to, letting him decide when he and Bianca should part company so he can take his first real steps toward adulthood. A wholly sympathetic character study, Ryan Gosling is utterly believable as Lars, who is at times quirkily funny and yet evokes heart-wrenching empathy. A tragi-comic portrayal of human resilience and new awakenings.
