Set in East Berlin 1989 during the last months of Germany's division Goodbye Lenin! is a comically bittersweet portrayal of the era of the wall and the varying generations who lived within it. On unexpectedly witnessing his arrest at a protest against the regime, Alex's fiercely Socialist mother suffers a heart attack and collapses in to a coma. Spending the next 8 months out of consciousness; she's oblivious to the fall of the Berlin wall and everything it signified, and so on waking has no idea Germany has been reunified. As a result, her children take it upon themselves to protect her weak condition by insuring Socialist Germany lives on - but only within the walls of their pokey apartment. Adorning the house with East German propaganda and newspapers, they even bizarrely find a way to fake news broadcasts and re-label food in the Socialist fashion. But when little lies become big ones, the charade gets harder to uphold.
